Summary: This dissertation brings the critical discourse analysis of the construction of the role of agroecology in the agrarian program of the MST, in its socio-environmental aspect, using as methodology the dialectical historical materialism and having as category of analysis, the metabolism being human / nature. And for the development of the dissertation, a literature review was carried out on the Brazilian agrarian question of the XXI century, focusing on understanding the breakdown of the metabolism between human being and nature, in order to contextualize the reality in which the MST is inserted and About what this fight. Advancing the research was a literature review on the theoretical foundations of agroecology, in order to bring the theoretical basis on science, since the MST was based on these fundamentals. And finally, the analysis of the MST public discourse was carried out in the documents published by the movement and in the light of the theoretical authors who study agroecology, in order to unveil how the MST relates agroecology to the proposal of social transformation and to the principles of sustainability Environmental, and what elements brought by the theoretical authors that the MST reaffirmed or denied in the construction of agroecology in its political program. The results of the analysis reveal that the MST brings the construction of an agroecology beyond a concept or sustainable practices, transcending the defense of an academic, institutional, and reformist agroecology. That is, it brings agroecology as a strategy for the operation of the model of agriculture proposed by the movement, which is based on social transformation for the people and on an environmentally sustainable basis. Therefore, the role of agroecology for the MST goes against the reality posed by the contradictions produced by the capitalist and inherent mode of production. Putting in check a way of agricultural production of economic rationality and fighting against a system that only aims at profit and nothing more.
