Summary: This research aims to analyze the precarious forms of work of the substitute professors of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) between the years 2013 and 2014, as well as its impact on their health, in the form of psychological suffering and illness. The bibliographical study was through scientific productions that approach the subject of this research, taking into account the main references of the studies in the areas of Labor Sociology, Social Work and Occupational Health. This work is a literature review of books, articles, dissertations and doctoral theses, pertaining to the theme of teaching in Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES), on the deterioration of work conditions , flexibility of labor rights, the worker’s health with emphasis on psychic suffering / labor illness and the intensification of work. The document search happened through the study of the laws governing the work of the substitute professors in the IFES. The exploratory research was performed by a mixed approach and it was held at Ufes. The questionnaire was the technique used, whose application aimed to know from the employees about their work, their impressions about their precarious employment reflected in their working contracts, hours, wages, on their the content of their professional performance, in the social relationships in which they are part not to mention its reflections on their health. The results showed that the substitute professors incorporate the current precarity and that the precarious nature of their work involves the intensification, especially the high level of effort, dedication and responsibility that the teaching activity requires, which brings workload and permanent tiredness. Besides that, work intensification is also manifested by reducing lifetime to working time. The findings indicate that psychological distress is more common among substitute professors than illnesses. The constraint of time, the intensification of work and loneliness at work are the main causes of this suffering which individualises these workers.
