Summary: The street dwelling population uses informal labor as their main survival strategy to the detriment of begging and street-smart, which have lower representativeness. The relation between street dwellers and informal labor is the object of this dissertation, which aims at discussing about this relationship in capitalist accumulation setting. It is a documental research study. The proposed research problem is reflected in the following question: what is the relevance of informal work for the street dwelling population? Our research adopted Brazilian and foreign studies and news articles, especially the newspaper “O Trecheiro". Based on reports of this paper, we outlined an analysis map to guide the data and reports that we highlighted. We understood that the critical framework is the most appropriate to tackle the theme proposed, that is why we chose it. We studied the street dwelling population and discussed about their relationship with the capitalist mode of production. We argued that this population group composes the relative surplus population in all its forms. We debated about informal labor and its subordination and/or subsumption to capital. We saw that the informal labor among street dwellers is the traditional type, that is, aiming at mere survival, in its most unstable section and that is functional to capitalism. We discussed about the relevance of informal labor to street dwellers. We noticed that the essence of informality in their lives is beyond mere survival or leaving the streets, it carries bigger meanings, linked to their identity. Informal labor is used against the shame of social despise deriving from begging; for making dreams come true; for having hope, self-value; and also for serving and maintaining addictions. Therefore, it goes beyond the material needs of survival.
