Summary: The metamorphoses of the labor world, especially since the 1970s, on the structural crisis of capital, would not fail to make a strong mark on the form of the working class. Since then, there has been a great effort on the part of sociological theory to reinterpret this reality either in the perspective of its denial, reaffirmation or in the elaboration of new categories. It is in this scenario that the present research is inserted, whose general objective is to analyze the theoretical and methodological foundations of the concept "precariat" and if there is in it an explanatory potential for the proper understanding of the social classes in the contemporaneity. For this, we seek to understand precarity as a condition of the labor force under the capitalist mode of production and the precariousness as its the historical process of development. We then perform a critical review of what we call "theories of precariat" with a focus on the works of Guy Standing, responsible for the recent diffusion of the concept, and by the brazilian sociologists Giovanni Alves and Ruy Braga, who rework in new theoretical bases. Finally, we bring to light the various critiques of precariat, from those that refute the whole concept, while denying its use in the analysis of class structure, recognize in it its political role.
