Summary: This study focuses on self-employed activities (cuentapropismo) in Cuba. It was sought to understand the reasons that led the Cuban society to approve and develop cuentapropismo on the island. Underlying this, it tried to investigate the role of cuentapropismo in Cuba`s economic recovery. It was also intended to describe how the Cuban society was restructured from the crises and how popular participation took place in the process of overcoming of these moments, and also in the construction of the update model. Furthermore, it was aimed to analyze the process in which cuentapropismo was expanded and consolidated from the lineamientos (set of political guidelines collectively constructed and adopted by Cuban society). In brief, the starting point of this study is the private sector called cuentapropismo and the analysis of its role in the restructuring and overcoming the crises in Cuba. This work is both a qualitative and quantitative investigation , which is developed through a bibliographic research and documentary. The object presented is being investigated from the discussions offered in articles, books, academic journals and also through data published by ONEI (National Office of Statistics and Information), speeches by Cuban political leaders and several documents.
