SUICIDE AND CAPITALISM IN ACADEMIC PRODUCTION IN BRAZIL: FELT ABSENCES AND DESCRIBED PRESENCES

Summary: Based on the assumption that social conditions influence the phenomenon of suicide, especially in contexts of social inequalities and unemployment, the objective of this dissertation is to analyze how the arguments of academic production in Brasil articulate the debate about suicide and capitalist, and its correlation with unemployment within the scope of social relations and
capitalist sociality, highlighting the theoretical trends and arguments present in these studies. To this and, the methodology used was qualitative, based on a literature review, with a special focus on theses and dissertations available in the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, with the final selection of eight theses and dissertations that were analyzed according to the theoretical arguments that permeate the objectives of this research. The results found indicate that, although suicide is recognized as a social phenomenon, its articulation with capitalism and unemployment still has its limitations. Part of the analyzed works bring considerations about suicide from an individual perspective, requiring an in-depth approach to the structural causes; but it must be considered that, also, the selected dissertations and theses present a critical view on suicide and its relations with the exploitation of labor and living conditions in capitalist. This dissertation highlights the urgency of a critical approach in public policies, increasingly requiring that analyze suicide and its manifestations contradicted by capitalism.
